Today is world ‘Blog Action Day’ the idea behind today is for all blogs around the world to promote one message in union and to show the power of blogs to get a message across. We over the last few weeks seen the beginnings of change in Burma widely through the power of the internet and people blogging what is going on inside that country it causing the rest of the world putting pressure on the Burmese government to start making changes.

Today’s ‘Blog Action Day’s’ topic is the environment and how you the person in the street can change the world…

As by now most of you know I am a Raw Vegan, this means I do not heat my food above 105c and I do not eat or wear any animal or animal product, this is anything from wool and leather to honey and products that have been tested on animals in laboratories.

So to my environment issue that I wanted to rise is about the air miles of foods that the Raw Vegan community consume. I know that by going raw we reduce the amount of methane that is produced by animal agriculture (farm animals produce more methane and dose more damage to the environment than the car industry, by reducing or cutting out animal products you will do more for the environment than buying a alternative powered car)

What we have to look at in our raw lives is our air miles. A lot of raw products have travelled a long way before they get on your plate and what I would like to encourage people to think before they buy. Where has that product, vegetable or fruit come from? For most of us we can’t say that bananas or coconuts grow in our back yard. Just a walk around the supermarket and a browse at some of the labels on your fruits and vegetables will show they come from all over the world…

This is the time to change your habits for at least one day a week…

Buy local and in season…

If you can find something local to replace the product that has travelled around the world then please replace it…

Offset your air miles by signing up to one of the emotions offsetting companies who will plant trees to offset the pollution produced by your food air miles…

Start a list and put it on your fridge of all the fruits and vegetables that are in season in each month in your country, you may also want to list how long they will last for and how to store them. Apples stored outside in a shed or some place cold wrapped in tissue will last most of the winter months… Pumpkins and onions will also last the winter…

Start saving the planet from your shopping basket to your plate…

Bear. X
