The Honey Question...

I first want to say that even though I'm against humans eating honey I do however think we need to provide habitat for Bee's where ever we can. Without Bee's a lot of our crops will not get pollinated and this means we would have problems with supply.

I have been asked to explain why Honey is not Vegan and why we should stop eating it and using Bee products...

Many animals store food for themselves and their young for times of shortage or when food is less abundant, this is no different for Bee's and their colonies. Honey is a food product for the Bee's not for humans, by taking their food we have to provide a food substitute or kill the colony.

A lot of main stream producers find it easier and cheaper to kill off the main colony during the winter and just keep the queens in a docile state till spring. But don't think that the queen is always safe, when Bee's are kept in a environment where humans continually interfere with the natural habitat, queens sometimes get aggressive or should I say protective over their hives. Once this happens a colony becomes less productive, queens are often removed and killed.

Now I know some of you are going to say that this is not always the case and 'you know a man who has a nice Bee hive and he teats his Bee's really nicely and he feeds them a sugar solution all through the winter and doesn't kill off any of the hive'. All farming for honey is still an exploitation of an animal.

There are 100's of websites on the matter and at the end of the day it is down to you as to what you do. If you like the taste of honey why not try Agave Nectar, you never know you may just like it...

While I haven't been vegan in a while, I still eat vegan-ly 3-4 days a week just because there are so many delicious options. I've been using agave nectar for about 2 years now, with much success -- mainly for health reasons. With agave, I don't get the sugar rush/depression I'd get from honey and cane sugar. It doesn't have the heavy flavor profile that honey does either. Anyhoo, like your blog. Keep up the great posts!
